Fit Campuses, Industrial Zones, Commercial Hubs, Harbors, and wonder timing into one city plan before the midgame map chokes itself.
Quick Answer
In Civ VI, district planning should happen before the city fills every good tile with farms, mines, or wonders. Lock the first high-value district early, reserve nearby adjacency tiles, then decide whether the city is meant to produce science, gold, production, faith, or a specific wonder timing. A mediocre district placed early is often stronger than a perfect district delayed until the city has no room.
First 100 Turns District Table
| City Situation | Best First District Lean | Tile To Protect |
|---|---|---|
| Mountains or reefs nearby | Campus | Mountain and reef adjacency tiles before farms cover them |
| River plus trade route need | Commercial Hub | River bend and Government Plaza triangles |
| Coastal city with sea resources | Harbor | Harbor triangle with city center and resources |
| Strong production city | Industrial Zone | Aqueduct, dam, canal, and cluster positions |
| Wonder race city | Wonder or supporting district first | Flat wonder tile plus chops and builder movement |
Practical Placement Rule
Before placing any district, ask what the city should still do 30 turns later. If a Campus blocks the only good Industrial Zone cluster, or a wonder blocks the best Harbor triangle, the short-term adjacency may cost more than it gives.
FAQ
Should every city build a Campus first?
No. Campuses are powerful, but trade routes, production, housing, and gold can matter more depending on victory route and map shape.
Should I wait for a perfect adjacency bonus?
Usually no. Waiting too long delays buildings, great people, and yields. Reserve great tiles, but place the district once the city can actually benefit from it.
